I appreciate your telling the audience up front that you don’t have all the facts about the Terri Schiavo case. Like you, I am hesitant to give an opinion about things without adequate information. I have tried to research it myself on the internet, but many aspects of the Schiavo story continue to be disputed. In her recent column, for example, Ann Coulter accuses Michael Schiavo, Terri’s husband, of refusing tests to determine if Terri was in a vegetative state. According to Wikipedia, however, Terri had been evaluated on many occasions by different doctors. Most, but not all, concluded she suffered catastrophic brain damage. One doctor in particular found no brain wave activity with an EEG; another stated that over 80% of her cerebral cortex was destroyed. The controversy, no doubt, will continue in the months and years to come, and we may never know all the facts; but I will say that if Terri Schiavo was correctly diagnosed, and she did confide to her husband and others that she would not want to be kept alive if she was in a persistent vegetative state, then the removal of her feeding tube was morally justified.

I have to disagree with the idea, however, that a lack of belief in an afterlife inevitably leads to hedonism and nihilism. Let’s imagine for a moment that you, Mr. Johnson, were to become convinced tomorrow that everything you thought you knew about God was wrong, and that there was no existence after death. Would you then abandon your family and friends to party all day and night, abuse drugs and alcohol, and have sex with as many partners as possible in the pursuit of pleasure? Somehow, I don’t think you would. While it is true that some people of lesser character may use this outlook as an excuse to justify self-indulgent behavior, I think this is more the exception than the rule.

As to the ongoing culture war, I have become more interested lately, especially after listening to your program, in what believers and unbelievers have in common. Take, for instance, the Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League founded by a self-described conservative Republican and Secular Humanist atheist to fight, in his words, “the life-denying horror of abortion.” There is also the fact that the Catholic Church and the late Pope Paul II, for all his conservative theology, embraced the science of evolution as fact. To be sure, there are important issues in which both sides don’t and likely will never compromise; but I think we lose sight sometimes of just how much they do agree upon. If you consider this topic worthy, perhaps you would consider pursuing it in a future show.

Thanks again for your interesting and thought-provoking program.

    Yours sincerely,

    Allen Nuti

    Dear Mr. Johnson,

Included in my e-mail of March 4th, I stated that the Catholic Church has “embraced the science of evolution as fact.” On further research, however, I don’t think this is entirely true. I’m still trying to understand exactly what the Vatican’s position is, and I plan to contact the Pontifical Academy of Sciences for a definitive answer. When I know more, I’ll let you know if you’d like.

    Yours sincerely,

    Allen Nuti
